I have been using adaptive technologies to help me get around and communicate for most of my life. I was very lucky to be in a school system that helped me and my family, and began working with computers in the early 1990’s, at Como Elementary School in St. Paul.
Some of the places that I have worked with are:
I am able to write and to speak for myself with a speech device that I operate with a head switch. I’d like to show you sometime.

I enjoy painting. I recently got an adaptive hand grip that really helps me hold brushes and other things. It is from a company in the UK, called Active Hands.

Being outside in the summer is great. It is a big reason why people live in Minnesota. But like everyone, the sun can get to be a bit much sometimes and we want some shade. We were able to assemble this sun canopy for Laura’s wheelchair. The top came with a yard-lounge chair and fits well… but how to attach it and make it a viable part of her wheelchairs functionality?

These amazing and very sturdy clips were found at the web site shadeusa and they are amazing. After attaching the clips to Laura’s wheelchair, the second part can be adjusted as needed. The round portion with the teeth has an opening that can pivot and hold an umbrella or tent pole.

The end result really exceeded our expectations. The sun canopy is adjustable to suit and change with the environment. It also collapses down and is easily stored. The clips are very secure but come off easily as well. We would encourage everyone to try things, and experiment with your ideas, because sometimes they really work out well!
